A comparison of two old retrievers

Around 45 years separated these dogs:

Dual Ch. Tonkahof Esther Belle (golden retriever, b. 1944):

Don of Gerwn ( liver Flat-coated retriever, with a “golden retriever” sire, b. circa 1900):

Don of Gerwn’s sire was Lucifer, who at that time would have been designated as a yellow Wavy-Coat (or Flat-Coat), of 2nd Lord Tweedmouth’s breeding. The dam was Abbot’s Rust; by the name, a red or liver colored bitch. Abbot was Mr. William’s keeper/trainer/handler.

The yellows were not recognized as “Retrievers (Yellow or Golden)” until about 1913. Around 1920 they became “Retrievers (Golden)”, and the Labradors kept the appellation of Yellow for that variation in “Retrievers (Labrador)”.
