   The shopka I bought while in the Urals was made from a Raccoon Dog pelt–very warm and plush.

     It’s not a raccoon. It’s a raccoon dog (Nyctereutes procyonoides). They are native to Asia, including the Russian Far East, and they were introduced to Europe via the Soviet fur trade. They have expanded their range into Central Europe and Scandinavia.

       By the way, raccoon dogs were the main vectors in rabies outbreak in Finland some decades ago.
