If previous years are anything upon which one can use to make predictions, the woodcock should be back this evening.
This week has been has been filled with cold rains and snow, but today, the temperature is in the 50’s and it’s clear.
The woodcock are usually back by the second weekend in March, so I hope to be able to get some photos or maybe some footage of the “sqweegy birds.”

I’m surprised that it didn’t just fly away when the flashlight was on it. I thought they were rather shy birds.
In my experience, they are not as shy during the mating season. If the cocks fly off, another cock will take his lek.
They are really fun to watch, when they fly up in the air in their courtship displays.
The rest of the year, they are hard to find. And during their hunting season, they are quite hard to hunt, because they fly off in all direction at rapid speeds.
